Different Types of Warm Air Heaters and How They Work

There are a few different types of warm air heaters including air to air heat pumps, gas-fired heaters, ducted heat pumps, and ground source heat pumps. They all work in slightly different ways and are suitable for different property types. Air to air heat pumps works in a similar way to air conditioning units. They blow warm air around your building. This provides an economic and effective method to heat your home or business. Within gas-fired heaters, heat is transferred to the air within the space via a gas fuelled flame. The heat is then distributed within the space primarily by the heaters themselves or with the additional use of destratification fans. The resulting warm air flow throughout the space is both comfortable and unobtrusive contributing to a pleasant working environment. Inducted unit heaters, the air is pulled into the home from a vent to the outside. This air is heated over a gas fuelled flame, which is then circulated around the property via a system of ducts. This type of heating is particularly effective in well-insulated properties. Heating air directly with a flame is very efficient and will rival a gas boiler in terms of efficiency, whilst ducting the air around the home is also very effective, and can heat a room very quickly, as well as help prevent damp and condensation builds up around the home.

Benefits of Warm Air Heaters Over Boilers

Some benefits of warm air heaters over central heating boilers include:

  • A modern air system provides fast warm-up times and will heat your home quickly.
  • The setup eliminates the need for radiators giving you more freedom in terms of the room layout.
  • Warm air systems are renowned for their quiet operation so your home won’t be disturbed by unwelcome noises.
  • These systems are very energy efficient with running costs as much as 18% lower than some other types of heating system.
  • Some modern systems have electronic controls to deliver a stable temperature and give you even greater control of your energy use.
  • Warm air systems can include the option of electronic filtration which regularly removes 95% of all airborne particles such as pollen, human and pet hair and bacteria.

The main reason they are not that common is that houses are not designed for them, especially ducted heaters which require ducts and vents fitted in the building. There are also less available on the market as there are few manufacturers.
